The Media Ombudsman of Georgia reports that more than 70 journalists and cameramen were injured by law enforcement during protests in Tbilisi over the past ten days. Despite these incidents, the Special Investigation Service has yet to identify or hold accountable any individuals responsible for these crimes.

According to the Ombudsman, critical media plays an irreplaceable role in strengthening democracy, a role the ruling Georgian Dream party seeks to suppress through the use of law enforcement and unofficial groups.

"Over the past ten days, more than 70 journalists and cameramen have been injured while covering pro-European integration protests. To date, not a single perpetrator from law enforcement has been identified or brought to justice by the Special Investigation Service.

Media freedom in Georgia faces numerous challenges. In recent years, we have witnessed blatant attempts to restrict media activity, rising violence against journalists, and a troubling trend of impunity for crimes committed against them.

Georgian media organizations operate under constant threats, including being labeled foreign agents or facing dissolution under Russian-inspired laws, while also dealing with limited financial resources and political pressure from Georgian Dream.

Despite these challenges, a segment of Georgian media remains steadfast in fulfilling its role as the fourth estate—monitoring those in power, fighting for truth and freedom. It has been said many times that media is the foundation of democracy.

It remains the sole reliable tool for ensuring that every member of society receives accurate information, expresses their opinions, and makes informed decisions. Respecting and protecting the lives and health of media representatives is crucial, as they must be able to report on current events freely and without obstruction,” the statement said.
