The mayor of Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, has joined other Georgian Dream leaders in accusing McDonald's of spreading "LGBT propaganda".

"I think everything is clear. When this filth is promoted, we have to call it by its true name, whoever it's from and wherever it is. When this filth is promoted to children, it is very harmful and we, the fathers and mothers, must speak out about it. This is about the little ones, our children and the future generations," said Kakha Kaladze.

"So, it is a very big filth, no matter who it comes from and no matter what country it comes from. Under no circumstances should we allow this and we should not give anyone the opportunity to promote this trend in the country," he added.

A McDonald's Happy Meal brochure mentioned the lives of famous people, in particular Elton John, saying he "got married and started the family he always dreamed of with his spouse David and two sons".

This was used by Georgian Dream for propaganda purposes, while the pro-government media launched a campaign to denigrate McDonald's.

The Georgian Patriarchate also condemned it.

"There is nothing wrong with what McDonald's Global is doing," said Temur Chkhonia, the owner of McDonald's Georgia, adding that there was nothing to apologize for and that some people were using the book for propaganda.

"Who are you going to explain [to someone] that Elton John is a genius?" Mr Chkhonia said.
