Giorgi Akhvlediani, Minister of Education, said the government only offered private universities to cover 20% of student debt, while also trying to pressure off the remaining 80%.

PM Irakli Garibashvili announced writing off debt for 30,000 students last week, whose student status had been suspended due to failure to pay tuition. The move is believed to cost around 40 million GEL (app. 16 million USD) and comes in the run-up to the next year’s parliamentary election. The move came right after Mr Garibashvili came under fire for using a Government jet to transport his son to study at the prestigious US University – University of Pennsylvania. Critics say the Government tried to mitigate criticism and that the move should be considered in the context of next year’s elections.

Following TV Pirveli’s exposure of the illegal use of Government-jet, Garibashvili’s office claimed the trip was paid for by the PM’s pensioner father.
