IRI: Public Figures and Institutions in Georgia

International Republican Institute (IRI) released public opinion survey, which was conducted in June 15-30. The sample consisted of 1,500 residents of Georgia aged 18 and older and eligible to vote. It is representative of the general population by age, gender, region and settlement size. The margin of error does not exceed +/-2.5%.

According to the survey, overwhelming majority of the population is in favor of Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II – 88%, who is followed by the Mayor of Tbilisi, Kakhi Kaladze – 58%, former Prime Minister of Georgia, now the leader of the opposition party For Georgia, Giorgi Gakharia – 56%, the recent Prime Minister, Irakli Garibashvili – 40%, and the leader of the major opposition party United National Movement, Nika Melia – 39%.

Concerning the popularity of Georgian institutions, vast majority of the respondents mentioned Georgian army – 85%, followed by the Patriarchate of Georgia – 80%, House of Justice – 76%, Police – 65%, and Georgian media – 58%.

  • 49% is dissatisfied with the current state of democracy in Georgia, and 45% is either satisfied, or somewhat satisfied;
  • 51% of the interviewees cited negative attitude towards the performance of the national government;
  • 61% assumes that Georgia’s politics are moving toward more polarization;
  • 97% thinks that polarization of Georgia’s politics is a bad development.
