Accidental death of 13-year-old girl, electrocuted in the fountain of a newly renovated Vake Park in Tbilisi has caused an outcry.
The fountain in Vake park where two more teenagers were injured as a result of accidental electrocution was opened day prior to the incident by Kaladze himself.
While he said he was ready to face any criminal responsibility should the investigation establish so, pressure has been mounting on Georgian Dream’s Secretary General to assume political responsibility and quit.
The victim, 13-year-old Marita Meparishvili was Georgia’s tennis champion in her age group.
The incident has also been linked with what is widely regarded as corruption and favoritism in state tenders at Tbilisi Municipality.
The owners of Greenservice+, the company that had carried out the works had been prosecuted and convicted of fraud and insider trading in 2013 (with the company then named as Greenservice). After the company and its owner Lasha Purtskhvanidze allegedly struck a deal with Georgian Dream later in that year, they merely renamed it into Greenservice+ and proceeding to win over 70 million GEL (up to 40 million USD) in tenders.
Corruption watchdog Transparency International-Georgia published a report in 2018 on corruption in state procurement with the focus on Greenservice+ and called to permanently blacklist individuals and companies with the track record of fraud in public procurement tenders.
It has also emerged that Greenservice+ had contracted a safety a blacklisted company.
