Rafael Mursakulov, 33 and a Tbilisi native has been arrested as a prime suspect in the murder of Shanae Brooke Edwards, an Australian citizen on July 30. Cloths, knife and other items from the murder scene were found at Mursakelov’s home, the Police reported.
The suspect turned out to be activist of the ruling party, the Georgian Dream. He specifically represented the party at the Mtatsminda District Election Commission, but quit on August 23.
Many photos from Mursakelov’s Facebook account also make his link with the ruling party clear. He also indicated Georgian Dream as a place of his employment.
It has been alleged that should this turned out to be true, affiliation with the ruling party saved Mursakelov from prosecution and emboldened further abuses.
“If there was a well-founded complaint about violence committed by the suspect and this was all ignored by the Police, or the Police were forced to ignore it because he had links to the ruling team, then this heinous crime is directly related to the policies of the Ivanishvili regime," European Georgia chairman Giga Bokeria stated.
