Just a day after the Venice Commission recommendation not to adopt the GD-submitted deoligarchization bill, the Georgian Parliament passed the deoligarchization bill in second hearing. GD chair Irakli Kobakhidze claimed the European Commission and the Venice Commission contradicted each other.
The Venice Commission had said in its recommendation that the draft law in its current form would create risk of arbitrary application.
In a statement rebuffing Mr Kobakhidze @EUinGeorgia extended clear backing to the Venice Commission.
“The European Union in Georgia supports the Venice Commission recommendations: better not to adopt the draft law on de-oligarchization given the described risks. EU is ready to support the Georgian authorities to find a better way forward with a systemic approach,” the statement reads.
Georgian Dream leaders have insisted the party’s founder Bidzina Ivanishvili, who continues to exercise enormous influence over the Georgian Government, cannot be qualified as an oligarch.
