The Police have detained three individuals, including owner of an apartment in the building’s ground floor and two construction workers he had hired. Upon the owner’s directions the workers carried out renovation works in breach of safety standards resulting in damage of the building’s walls in turn leading to its collapse.
Rescue workers extracted five bodies from the debris of the collapsed building in Batumi, including two children.
Just two individuals were rescued alive from the debris, though one of them passed away several hours later, being in a critical condition.
October 11 was declared as the day of mourning for the victims of this tragical event.
