In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of 13 EU member states, including Germany, France, and Poland, have sharply criticized Georgia's ruling party, Georgian Dream (GD), for engaging in an “unprecedented campaign of propaganda, disinformation, plain lies, and defamation” against Western allies. The ministers reaffirmed their support for Georgia’s aspirations to join the European Union, while warning that the country’s EU accession process is currently on hold due to its political trajectory.

The letter, signed by ministers from Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Sweden, emphasized that the European future of Georgia remains in the hands of the Georgian people. The ministers expressed concern that Georgian Dream’s actions have derailed the country’s EU membership bid and criticized attempts to downplay or misrepresent the severity of the situation.

“It is our concern for Georgia’s European future that compels us to issue this statement,” the letter reads. The ministers called out specific legislative moves, particularly Georgia's controversial “Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence,” as incompatible with EU values. The European Council, representing the heads of state and government of all 27 EU member states, confirmed in June 2024 that Georgia’s EU integration is effectively frozen.

The letter stated: “Georgia will not be in a position to become a member of the EU if the current political course continues. Toning down or interpreting this clear decision in any other way is either delusional or outright deceitful.”

The ministers also condemned what they described as an organized smear campaign by certain Georgian politicians, accusing them of spreading false claims about Western intentions. These include unfounded accusations of coups and assassination plots against Georgian officials, and efforts to draw Georgia into international conflicts.

Despite the criticism, the EU ministers reaffirmed their commitment to Georgia’s European future, emphasizing that the door to EU membership remains open. “We are eager to welcome you into the European family,” they wrote, adding that free and fair elections in Georgia are crucial. They stressed that the ultimate decision about the country’s future lies with the Georgian people.

“Georgia’s future is in your hands,” the ministers concluded, urging citizens to choose a European path for their country.
