Peter Stano, the European Commission’s lead spokesman on foreign affairs said the EU was aware of media reports of diplomats being under surveillance. Peter Stano spoke to Radio Liberty about it.

"We are informed on the Georgian media information, concerning EU Ambassador and the staff of the EU Delegation, which has been recorded and became public recently,”- noted Stano.

The publication quotes him saying “this is a very serious issue, as it matters in terms of diplomatic relations, within the framework of the Vienna Convention." He summarized that the EU will act according to the custom and called the massive leak of 25 GB, covertly recorded files and surveillance summaries, in short Geoleaks, a “possible incident.”

On September 13, covert files were leaked from the State Security Service. The records are dated 2013-2021. The files lead to the conclusion, that both: the staff of the embassies and the Ambassadors are under surveillance.

One of the files contain conversations between US embassy staff not only with representatives of the Georgian Patriarchate, but also amongst themselves, including personal email correspondence. Communications mainly concern the religious affairs and interaction with members of the clergy.

The files include communication the EU, Israeli, Estonian and Azerbaijani Ambassadors, focusing on their interaction with the Patriarchate of the Georgian Orthodox Church.

The files also contain personal information about the members of the Synod, the coronation of the Patriarch, the priests, the Patriarch's assistants, the bishops, the nuns and persons related to them. According to the recordings, public figures and journalists were also under surveillance.
