In an eyebrow-raising letter published on Facebook on October 6, PM Gharibashvili laid out various explanations for of Mikheil Saakashvili’s arrival to Georgia, claiming the former President’s goal was not to surrender but to “stage a coup d’état.”

In an aggressive and conspiracy-leaning tone, prompting many to speculate that the text’s real author in fact is Bidzina Ivanishvili, Garibashvili declared that Saakashvili is a “drug addict.”

“I would also like to inform the public that Saakashvili's revolutionary intentions were doomed to failure in all cases. According to his plan, even if he suddenly appeared on Rustaveli Avenue on October 3, the police would use a water cannon or a maximum of strangling gas to disperse a crowd of just 5,000 and arrest Saakashvili easily,” he said.

Gharibashvili also called the Rose Revolution of 2003 through which Mikheil Saakashvili’s reform-minded team came to power and regarded by most of the world as a success a “coup.”

“In 2003, when the country’s immunity was lowered, Saakashvili and UNM gained power through a coup and throwing stones, rather easily,” he said.

Garibashvili sums up by calling UNM “a group of empty-handed people with criminal leanings” and declaring the entire rose revolution period was a “disaster” full of “innumerable crimes.”
