Coalition for Media Advocacy: GD Should Stop Assaulting Media

The Coalition for Media Advocacy posted fact-based information of the attacks on journalists during October 30 mayoral runoffs. According to the organization, journalists and cameramen were obstructed in their professional activities and were insulted by representatives of the ruling party.

"Today, on October 30, 2021, during the coverage of the second round of local self-government elections until 16:00, there were cases when journalists and cameramen were not able to freely perform their professional duties. They were called: opposition activists, slanderers and opposition servants”, the NGO said.

Coalition for Media Advocacy publishes videos of specific facts, which include images of assaults on journalists of Formula TV, Mtavari TV, TV Pirveli , TV 25, New Press and on.ge.

Formula TV journalists have been assaulted at various polling stations of different regions during the whole day. Information about the attack on other media representatives is also spread.

The second round of local self-government elections, mayoral runoffs has been held in key cities of Georgia on October 30. The second round of elections was held in 5 self-governing cities and 15 municipalities, where mayors have been elected.  

In the second round, the candidates from the ruling party Georgian Dream and the United National Movement competed with each other.

The first round of local elections was held on October 2, but some of the candidates failed to cross the threshold, which necessitated a second round. In particular, a 50% threshold was required for the election of municipal mayors, and a 40% threshold was required for majoritarian council members.
