Georgian Dream chairman Irakli Kobakhidze has again backed four MPs pushing conspiracy theories that the US has been trying to ‘push Georgia into war’ calling US Ambassador Kelly Degnan’s comments on them ‘insulting.’

Degnan has said there were questions in Washington on why would the Georgian Government not distance itself more clearly from the accusations. “The accusations that they [4 MPs] most recently made against the US and others are reckless, conspiracy theories that have no basis in fact,” she said.

Kobakhidze’s comments add a new confrontational stroke in Georgian Dream’s already strained relations with the US Ambassador, against the background of Ukrainian counter offensive, Russia’s military mobilization and the spike of Russians inflow into Georgia.

It has also emerged that the four MPs, who have pushed the conspiracy theories and attacks on Ms Degnan, remain part of the parliamentary majority and attended its recent retreat.

In a new open letter, they – Dimitri Khundadze, Mikheil Kavelashvili, Sozar Subari and Guram Macharashvili – push yet another outlandish conspiracy theory, often heard from Russian propagandists, that the US funding of civil society in Georgia is aimed at undermining Georgia. They also bizarrely claimed that the benefit that the US extracted from Georgia equals to 2.5 billion USD.

The MPs have consistently accused Ambassador Degnan and the US of pressuring Bidzina Ivanishvili into sanctioning Russia and inviting Russian war upon Georgia.

The US Department of State as well as various officials have consistently backed the Ambassador while Mr Kobakhidze and other key Georgian Dream leaders have both endorsed the conspiracy theory and refused to condemn the accusations, while maintaining they not always agree with the four MPs.
