Georgian Dream Chair Irakli Kobakhidze said the ruling party has decided to launch an impeachment process against President Salome Zourabichvili.

Mr Kobakhidze said the decision was triggered by Ms Zrouabichvili’s decision to go ahead with touring European capitals despite the Government’s refusal to authorize her trip.

Under the Georgian Constitution, Government approval is necessary for all official trips of the President.

“The impeachment requires the votes of 100 MPs to complete, and therefore, without the votes of the radical opposition, it has no prospect of implementation. However, despite this, at the meeting of the political council of the party, we decided to initiate the impeachment procedure against the President of Georgia. This is our responsibility before the Constitution of Georgia,” Kobakhidze said.

“The impeachment procedure will once again expose the common agenda of the radical opposition and Salome Zourabichvili, which is directed against the state interests, including receiving the [EU] candidate status,” he added.

Zourabichvili says she wants to lobby for the positive decision to grant Georgia the EU candidate status in December this year.

Relations between Brussels and Tbilisi have been increasingly chilled amid Georgia’s refusal to adhere to the EU’s policies on Ukraine, as well as Georgian Dream leaders’ systematic accusations of the West of conspiracy to “drag Georgia into war.”
