Some of Georgia’s most reputable civil society organizations, including Transparency International – Georgia have called the Georgian Government to hospitalize imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili to a civilian hospital, in line with recommendations of a consilium of doctors and the Public Defender.

“The signatory organizations are responding to the developments surrounding the hospitalization of the third President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, and believe that the government should address the matter of his hospitalization not for political expediency, but only for a high standard of protection of human life, health and personal security.

Mikheil Saakashvili has been on hunger strike for 26 days since his arrest. Given the period of starvation, the risks of his deteriorating health and the need for hospitalization are increasing every minute. According to the conclusion of the Council of Doctors convened by the Ministry of Justice of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili should be hospitalized in a hospital staffed with the relevant personnel and medical equipment. According to the conclusion of the Public Defender of Georgia, the Facility №18 (so-called prison hospital) does not fully comply with the recommendations issued by the multifunctional group of doctors in terms of medical care.

Additionally, according to the statement of the Public Defender, the placement of Mikheil Saakashvili in the Facility №18, which is located in the same space next to the Penitentiary Facility №8, contains certain risks to his safety.

Considering above-mentioned, we call on the authorities to take full account of the conclusion and recommendations of the multifunctional group of doctors and the Public Defender of Georgia when discussing the hospitalization of the third President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, and to make a decision on hospitalization so that to exclude all risks pertaining to life, health and security,” the statement reads.
