Oleg Nikolenko, Spokesperson for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs slammed Irakli Kobakhidze, Chairman of Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party following his statement on welcoming a possible resumption of direct flights between Georgia and Russia.

Noting that the statement was preceded by praising of Georgia by Russia’s FM Sergey Lavrov “for not joining Western sanctions against Russia for its aggression against Ukraine”, Mr Nikolenko said “such pro-Russian rhetoric is not in line with the spirit of Ukraine and Georgia's friendly and strategic relations, contrary to Georgian course for European Union membership.”

In the statement, The Ukrainian official also brought up the matter of the ongoing Russian occupation of Georgia, accusing official Tbilisi of “exchanging reverences” with Moscow “against the background of Russia's unpunished crimes against the Georgian people and the occupation of part of Georgian territory.”

Mr Nikolenko concluded by emphasizing Ukraine’s continued support for Georgia’s struggle for freedom, stating that “the lack of effective solidarity with Ukraine by some Georgian politicians amid Russia's efforts to annihilate Ukrainians in the genocide war is political treachery.”
