Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian President and current deputy chairman of the National Security Council has issued an open praise for the Georgian Government and its push to adopt Russia-style “foreign agent” law, slamming the ongoing protests in the Georgian capital as well as the United States.
"The discussion in Tbilisi about the law of foreign agents has moved into the street clashes and Georgian joyful severe beating in the parliament. Whoever calls such actions a spontaneous protest, let him be the first to throw a stone at his own reflection in the miorror. Behind all these rallies, an experienced and well-known Hollywood hand can be seen. The main thing "demonstrators" don't like in the "transparency of foreign influence" law, which the Georgian parliament is trying to pass is a "Russian idea" and not a Western initiative,” Medvedev wrote.
Medvedev also repeats one of Georgian Dream’s key talking points claiming the law’s similarity with American FARA and that the EU and different European governments are considering similar legislation. This claim has been consistently rejected by both US and the EU, including German Chancellor Olaf Sholz.
"A year ago, by the way, the US State Department, through the official representative Price, expressed "satisfaction" when the Georgian authorities withdrew the previous draft of the law discussed today. This is because (literally) the document was "incompatible with Euro-Atlantic values". Well, yes, the values are different. The Black Sea is not the Atlantic, Georgia [in English] is not Georgia, despite all the similarities of the names,” he added.
“Atlantic values are forced upon with Maidan and blood, which is a rather dubious gift. They are less and less liked by the countries that were fully subservient to the Anglo-Saxons. It seems that their patience and persuasion have reached an inevitable limit today. This is just the beginning," he concluded concluded.
