RFERL, Formula TV Say Their Journalists were Spied by State Security Service

Giorgi Mgeladze, a US-Congress-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist and Nino Gelashvili of Formula TV were indeed part of conversions Mtavari TV director Nika Gvaramia read out as alleged State Security Service illegal surveillance reports, their employers said. The surveillance reports provide conversations of the journalists while fulfilling their professional duties. The dialogues did not include any sign of crime, or classified information.

The materials presented by Nika Gvaramia, General Director of Mtavari TV, are the leaked documents which are only a small part of the so-called covert surveillance, produced by the State Security Service. The text documents include the time of recording, main subjects and a brief summary of the conversation. It also includes so called "landmarks" of what activities should be followed with regard to the surveillance subjects. The reports are targeted at the public figures, clergy, opposition members, journalists, current and former employees of the government administration; their private and professional activities. The documents cover the 2020 pre-election period, as well as the current year.

The State Security Service declined Formula TV's request for a comment and the ruling party leaders rejected authenticity of the documents.
