Polish President Andrzej Duda paid an unexpected stopover visit to Tbilisi on his way to attend the opening ceremony in Beijing.

Using the opportunity to meet with his Georgian counterpart Salome Zourabichvili, Duda delivered a strong message of support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while focusing on Ukraine in his comments.

At the joint press conference last night Ms Zourabichvili too voiced strong support to Ukraine contrasting with her own mostly reserved rhetoric and Prime Minister Garibashvili’s complete silence.

Expressing “full solidarity” with Ukraine and recalling Georgia’s own experience with the Russian aggression, Zourabichvili in particular said the situation was not only threatening that country but was also directed “against the security of Europe.”

In a more controversial part of her statement, Zourabichvili, while calling Russia’s actions “provocative” expressed hopes for “both sides” to be ready for peaceful talks “in order for this situation to de-escalate,” though she did not specify what actions were needed on behalf of Ukraine.

Georgian Government has come under fire for abstaining from actively engaging in diplomacy jointly with Ukraine with Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili still maintaining complete silence over the crisis.
